I wanted to give everyone an update on where we are with the Waterfowl Slam. The second year of the program was very successful. We had more participants than the previous year and were able to raise over $10,000 dollars. The beauty of this program is that every penny will be spent on waterfowl habitat projects in the state. The funds can also be matched with federal and other monies, which will give us at least 4X the amount we raise each year.

Based on feedback we’ve received from hunters, we are happy to announce a new shoveler slam this year. We will also provide an Ultimate Slam, which when completed, will allow hunters to collect a gold colored band, an authentic goose neck collar, and a certificate of achievement. All other slams we’ve provided in the past will also be available to participants.

We have raised enough money through this program to identify a project we can complete using this money. Over the last year we have looked for an opportunity to provide additional access for waterfowl hunters. We’ve identified a project at Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area which will create a new unit in an area dominated by phragmites. This would open an area previously inaccessible to hunters and create high quality nest and brood rearing areas, in addition to hunting opportunities each fall. We intend to use all money raise this year to create this new unit.

We hope you all will consider participating in the Waterfowl Slam in 2015. It’s a great way to test your hunting prowess and give back to the resource!
