2023 General Season Youth Turkey

It seems like warmer temperatures are finally here to stay in NE Utah!

I'm really looking forward to this year and all the adventures that are planned. The first is the youth turkey hunt. We'll be hunting private land and some unpressured birds on the opener here in a couple weeks.

We pattern tested a couple different loads at 20 yards and 40 yards:

20 ga. Nitro Turkey, 20 yards (left) and 40 yards (right):

Bird Organism Beak Adaptation Font

20 ga TSS, 20 yards (left) and 40 yards (right):

Bird Plant Organism Beak Terrestrial plant

I believe the TSS load will work just fine. The warmer temps added another reason for a crawfish boil:

Food Arthropod Recipe Ingredient Seafood
Food Plant Rangpur Ingredient Natural foods

Best of luck to everyone on their 2023 hunts!

Wow, those tss loads are really something! Sounds like you got a lead on a good spot. Good luck with it.

It looks like either load will do the job! TSS is the real deal, but I can’t stomach the exhorbitant price tag on that stuff.

I need to get out and pattern some loads with different chokes. It's been forever and I can't remember what load did what in what gun and what choke was used in what gun. It's called a"Senior Moment"
I about choked when I saw the TSS price! I've killed birds using 12G Prairie Storm copper plated lead and it isn't $10 a shell. But....The TSS is "OMG" as CPA has proven. Best of luck with the junior hunters and I'm sure you'll all have a fantastic time.

Do you load your own shells Jeff? That’s the only way I’d pay for TSS and it’s still expensive. Obviously works, but so will 3” 6s buffered with 4s. Gotta say one thing, they’ve marketed the stuff well.

I’ve killed them with 1-1/8oz #4 3” steel Xpert waterfowl loads. It didn’t kill them well…. But it did eventually work 🤭

27-1/2" Gold Tip with a 100 gr. Muzzy kills them at 60 yards. (when you hit them)

No, I don’t reload them myself… I should probably start! I found a killer deal, once upon a time, at the local Sportsman’s Warehouse and picked up TSS shells for about $3 a shell. I still have plenty left for our hunting needs, but will run out at some point in the distant future.

I cannot wait for this season! It'll be my Son's first tag all by himself. We're stoked for the time together and he is stoked about his new camo.

Any Idaho bear hunting for you this spring?

Most folks have no idea how much better it really is. So I'd say it's been marketed pretty badly...

Hey Color, maybe? My wife is starting a Master's degree in the Fall so we're dropping down to one income and trying to be conservative. I have been trying to pinch pennies to go again, because I already have an Idaho license (I "accidently" left it on autorenew), but nothing set in stone.

Right on. I'm debating on it myself. The snow has me seriously pondering the logistics of a spring bait hunt, but my buddy is still all in. I'm afraid he might be 3/4 retarded and I don't have the heart to tell him.

That is my cousin and his pack of boys, they're great to hunt with! Absolutely feral. They're already up and going, despite the snow. I only have a .308 rifle, and a .243 youth for my son, so I think I might sit this season out and any extra pennies might go towards a 7mm PRC from Ruger. I want a magnum, and am intrigued by that round.
My 10 year old purchased a turkey tag. I've never hunted turkey before. Any suggestions?
Get out and find them. Knock on doors if you are hunting private and see if they will give you access if you find turkeys on their land.

No different than if you are hunting them

You probably failed to mention that you bought a tag as well, but playing the kid card in an attempt to get more information…

they are out there. Go find them. Just like everyone else has to.
