7mm PRC

Hey all, has anyone here jumped on the new 7mm PRC bandwagon yet? I have gone up and down the rabbit hole on this gun and almost have myself talked into it. It really seems to split the diff between the 7mm Rem Mag and the 300 Win, which I have been debating between for a couple years now. Granted I don't do enough big game hunting, but I'd like to still get a Magnum and get used to it for future trips. I know the 28 Nosler is about the same, but burns barrels. If anyone has all the above, or some combination of the lot, can I come shoot them with you to decide? I'll buy some ammo!

They all burn barrels. Any time you burn a lot of powder in a skinny bore you will get throat erosion. Starting with a long throat will minimize the effects, but it will still be there. The simple solution is to go out and shoot, have fun, and when your velocities and accuracy are affected then you get a new barrel and start all over again.

My brother got one. It came after last hunting season so we haven’t killed anything with it yet, but stay tuned!
I'd be looking into a 6.8 western, ammo is easy to find and it'll kill anything in utah with less recoil then a big magnum. That being said I did build a 300prc and love it.

I'm somewhat interested in one. I have zero need for one and will likely never actually buy one. My 7RM just keeps killing whatever I point it at, so I find it very hard to justify a new rifle.

I'll never own one, I went with the 6.5 prc to reduce recoil over my 7 RM. The 7prc has considerablely more recoil over the 7 RM . I guess for someone that wants reduced recoil over the 7UM or 300 WM. Then it might be a good choice.
Why is it that some folks like to jump on the latest cartridge buying bandwagon? I guess the 25-06, 270, 30-06, 6.5-06AI just won't kill deer and elk anymore.

When you forget your custom ammunition, and get out in the hills 100 miles from home, try running to Walmart to pick some up. I'm not saying the newer cartridges are crap, just saying I feel it's more of a "want" than a need.

Long range target shooting and hunting, I feel has driven the these cartridges in popularity. I don't own wildcat calibers, other than the 6.5-06AI. I know you can say the 25-06 and 270 are wildcats from the 30-06 and many other popular cartridges that have been around for 50 years are as well..

Because they can? Not trying to be flippant about that, but I really think that’s the answer.

The first part of this has been an argument I’ve heard and even espoused for a long time. I no longer do. Don’t forget your ammo! Problem solved. I’ve never a single time had to go buy ammo on a big game hunt, and have never seen anyone have to do that either. That’s 30+ years with a multitude of people. I’m sure it could happen, but we control that. Don’t let it happen.

The second part of that is absolutely true. We all have huge lists of things we own because we want to, not because we need them. Any rifle fits that description these days, and I think that’s okay.
My favorite caliber would be a 27Fritz, I have 2 guns in it, both 24" 7.5 twist, ones a heavy barrel ones a light hunting gun, I shoot hornadyb145gr eldx from both at 2900fps, its a 308 base cartridge, ive dropped coyotes deer pronghorn bull elk cow elk potguts all in there tracks with it... not cuz its a giant magnum its a short action 260 brass, but I just shoot alot and make the shot count. That's what matters, be comfortable with what you shoot, trust youe r equipment and practice.

Your statement is 1000% true!! I hope 1000% is an actual measurement, if not, it should be.

I jumped on the 7prc train super fast, probably one of the first ones built in the state, and I’ll share my reason why. Admittedly, some of which really aren’t all that practical.

I have rifles from 6.5CM, 6.5PRC, 28 Nos, and 300 win mag. Capable range of choices to do anything I’d want with. I’ll compare my reasoning for the 7PRC against my 28 Nos. 28 is awesome. It’s frankly superior to the 7prc in many ways. Faster, hits harder, and just kills so good. Also kicks way harder, uses way more powder, will shoot out a barrel faster (which I don’t care if i ever had to replace a barrel, no biggy), and factory ammo has become so dang hard to find and expensive as heck. We have had great results with factory hornady eldx’s with all of the above calibers listed about and my personal knock on the 28 is it only comes in 162 grain bullets from hornady. I believe the 28 should be in 180+ grain bullets. When the 7 was announced, the hype gave me exactly what I wanted Close to a 180 gr factory loaded bullet. Reduced recoil, less powder, and more efficient round that will still shoot close to 3,000 FPS.

It shoots incredible well. Recoil is not much more than my 6.5 prc with a muzz brake. I shoot the 7prc suppressed and it is just a lot of fun. While i believe the efficiency of this case is going to surpass the 7rem in many ways and become much more popular in the future, I don’t know that I would’ve got it if I had a 7rem already. both the 28 and 7 can have some box length concerns with loading longer bullets which isn’t an issue with the 7prc that I am aware, plus I only Plan to shoot factory ammo for the foreseeable future.

i have no regrets, absolutely love this rifle and cartridge and I can’t wait to see it in action this fall. TS

"7rem" what? 7Rem Express? 7Rem Mag? 7Rem STW?

I'm assuming you meant 7Rem Mag.

Your reply was exactly what I was looking for! That being said, when can I come meet you and try out a few calibers? lol
Thanks TS!

I've been tempted more than once to jump on the 7 PRC wagon.

I keep going back on getting a 300 PRC, but then it's not all that different than a 300 Win Mag. Then, I look at the 7 PRC and it's not all that different from a 7Rem Mag.

Choices, choices, choices.

Yes, that’s correct. Thanks for the clarification.

I’ll be getting a 300 PRC next. Haha. I like guns. Down the road I need hunt bears in AK.
