Mamacake is out sea duck hunting today, so Ava and I took the cupcakes out for an adventure. Mamacake didn't feel comfortable handling Ava on the ocean without me. Which is probably for the best since Ava is convinced she can retrieve sea otters and sea lions, as they are basically water foxes (her eye's words, not mine).
The morning got off to good start, but the cupcakes were a little scared of the steep hill and wanted me to shoot the first bird.
After that, it was game on. Girlycake shouldered Mamacake's 20 ga and Ava found some more spruce grouse. Girlycake made a great ground sluice on her very first bird! But when Ava was 10 feet away, the bird revealed Himself as a Jesus Grouse and flew off into the thick stuff.
Ava and I took off to try and find it. After 5 minutes, it appeared that Jesus Grouse has been spending time with Houdini Grouse and might have given us the slip.
Enter Boyocake, stage right. "I see a bird! Over here!"
Jesus Grouse had made about a 100 yard half circle before floating to the forest floor. Girlycake lined up again and finished the job well enough to make any proper Roman proud, and Ava wasn't gonna let this one get away either. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Now it was Boyocake's turn to try for his first bird.
We made it 10 minutes before Ava found the next victim. Boyocake took Mamacake's gun, lined up a nice sluice, and BLAAM! The bird was down, but not out. Ava to the rescue, and we enjoyed a semi-aeronautic chicken chase to bring his bird to hand.
Success never looked so fine!
His faces and poses crack me up!
Girlycake was back in the hot seat, and with Ava leading the way on the trail we knew we were in for more action.
We got in the car and drove up a dozen miles to the end of the road. It was pouring rain and so the flock of ptarmy bastages that I glassed 500 yards away up a steep slope were never in any danger. The cupcakes really weren't interested in that kind of ordeal, and occasionally I do the smart thing so I didn't push it.
As we returned to the scene of Girlycake's original crime, we got out to try to find a target. Possibly one mourning the loss of it's Birdy Saviour. It didn't take Ava long to find a lost soul.
Girlycake crept up in front of Ava, found the bird on the side of the trail, I handed her the gun and BOOM! We sent Ava for the retrieve and magically the bird is by our side. This is kinda fun!
Boyocake was hoping to find one more bird, but with the rain he decided the comforts of the iPad and candy in the car were better. So we called it a morning and headed home.
But first we needed another pic of all the birds!
Mamacake is still out duck hunting so hopefully she had a good time! Meanwhile, the Cupcakes are excited for their tail fan and wing mounts to dry out so they can bring them into their bedrooms!
