Hey guys during my pre-season scouting I found several watering holes/wallows the elk were hitting back in June/July. Last night, I was sitting over one of the spots I scouted and heard a freight train coming through the woods. I came to full draw, and unfortunately it was a young cow moose.

My question is do you guys think the elk have moved on if a moose is using this spot or will elk and moose use the same watering hole? I'm trying to figure out whether it's a waste of time to sitting over again. Any input or sharing of your experiences would be greatly appreciated!

They will both use the same spots in my experience. Moose don't have nearly the effect as moo cows and sheep do.

According to a DWR biologist I spoke to we had close to a foot of rain in July over most parts of the Uintas, because of this the animals have more choices for water without using the same watering holes that you may be used to seeing them at.

The only thing you have to worry about are SHEEP! I hate those dam things! Moose, deer, cows, all have very little effect on elk. I would sit over that wallow ever chance i got. Something will come to you.

I watched a group of Moo cows and Cow elk feed together side by side last year for the first time which told me those two species aren't bothered too much by each other at all.

Moose however might be a little different, but I really do not know. The moose I have seen always act like they are king of the hill...because they typically are.

30-06, thanks for the precipitation info. I'm hunting an area of the Wasatch which I would imagine got a similar amount of rain. That said, I know the area I'm hunting pretty well and there aren't too many other water sources despite the heavy rain (it's very steep and the water runs right off doesn't accumulate in ponds, after the wash dries up, there's not much left). I've read several of your other posts and found them insightful, I'm curious to know whether you think elk will come back to a watering hole the moose are using too. Thanks!

Two years ago I had a bull moose come in to my pond and drink. He then came and browsedan the tree I was sitting in right below my feet! He could have knocked me out of the tree easily. He walked off and a few minutes later a cow came in and I shot her. I don't think they'd come in at the same time but they both will use the same water.

Keep hunting that waterhole/wallow while it's warm. If you sat it 3-4 times with nothing coming in, then I would consider moving. Probably not before.
