I am looking to buy a new shotgun. I mainly do pass shooting for ducks. I know that I want a 12ga. and a semi-auto. I have approx. $500 to spend. What is the best gun for the money?

Here is what I got from another forum I belong to from a gunsmith in the midwest about Semi-autos:

If you want a great semi-auto shotgun the Charles Daly Maxi-Mag is the way to go. It will shoot all 3 lengths of shells and has a gas system with two gas sleeves one for light loads and one for heavy loads. It's easy to change and both sleeves are with the gun at all times. With this type of system it causes less wear on the gun when shooting heavy loads and it also helps damplen the recoil, when shooting the heavier loads. No recoil spring in the stock to rust or get dirty, which is hard to get to and clean. The guns come with a lifetime warranty, 3 choke tubes and use the same tubes that the Remingtons use so you can use the specialty type chokes for turkey hunting or even the rifled ones if you're wanting to shoot sabots in it.

Well for your price range I would look for a used Remington 1187; if price doesn't matter I vote SBE.
I tried out an EEA MP153 a few years ago, it was a good cheap $300 shotgun, works well enought for the most part but you get what you pay for.

FYI if you are interested in one of those mp 153's; remington now markets them as the spartan (453?) auto they import from Brakial (russia).

Save your money. If you want a new gun, you're not gonna get a nice auto for $500. You could get a great pump (with some models you'd have $$$ left over) but if your heart is set on an auto, save some more cash. IMO ,you won't even find a nice used auto worth owning for five hun unless you got super lucky.

The best gun for you is always the gun that fits you best. Unfortunately, this can not be divined or otherwise determined over the internet. As far as $500 bucks for an auto, I'd say look at used guns, but even at that, you aren't going to have a lot of quality choices. But look around Cabelas, Gallensons, The Gift House, or anywhere else that sells used guns and heck, may even want to repeatedly shoulder a few. You may find a keeper or two in your price range. You may get lucky with the lower cost autoloaders as well, i.e. Tristar, Baikal - aka - EAA, aka - Remington Spartan, Stoeger, or best yet (IMO) - CZ, but they are hard to come by. But ultimatly, I have learned through sad experience in my life - you do end up getting what you pay for.

I got a buddy that has one (M2000) and is looking to upgrade. I has worked well for him and now is just looking to get a SBE II. He's kept it in really good shape. I worked the action for him a little and now is alot smoother than one you'll buy brand new. It is 2 years old and hasn't had all but 500 rounds through it. If your interested in it let me know. He told me he's willing to let it go for $300.

Well, I bought me a new shotgun tonight, I got myself a Beretta Xtrema2 with the kick-off system. Don't get me wrong I love my SBE but lately I have had problems taking the recoil of the heavier loads I shoot sometimes (yeah I know what's coming; stop shooting them). I'm gonna take it out tommorrow night and give it a tryout.

Mojo congratulations on the getting the best duck gun....
(that should start a fire storm in here)
I hope you enjoy it, I know it will soften the recoil a ton.
And adjust the cast and comb for the prefect fit.

Heres to happy shoulders *(())*

Well, I took my new Xtreme 2 out this weekend; I think I'm gonna like it a lot, sorry guys I'm still keeping my old SBE. I killed a pheasant, and a few ducks with it.
