Best Premium Deer unit?

2274 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  proutdoors
Due to the death of my hunting partner a few years ago just as I drew out for the Paunsaugunt, I quit hunting for a few years.....I surrendered that permit, and now find myself ready to go hunting again, and with 14 points I can probably draw on any unit I want. Any suggestions on which is the best Premium Deer unit to hunt? Book Cliffs, Paunsaugunt, Henrys? I am hunting SouthEast this year just ot get back in it, and then want to do the "hunt of a lifetime" next year and am just looking for opinions as to where to go. I am assuming Henry Mtn, but since I've never been there, thought I'ld ask the pros! :?:

That's a good assumption on the unit, but it will still be difficult to draw, even with the amount of points you have. The Henry's has been called one of, if not THE best trophy mule deer unit period. Some would debate the Az. strip or the Kaibab are better, so I would say it's one of the top 3. You can't say that about the paunsaugunt and definitely not the book cliffs, with a straight face in my opinion.

Henry's, without a doubt.
2nd the Henry's, I wouldn't even think twice about it.
14 points... You're about half way there. I hope you're not too old.... :?
Bookcliffs have some huge deer. That is where I have been applying to ever since I spent a summer working and living in Bonanaza.
If you have never hunted the Heneries, you may waste a permit should you draw. I would agree that Henry mountains are a great area, but they are a tough place to hunt and very steep. I would put in for a place you have hunted or I would go down and learn the area first, before you apply.

I just spent several days on the Henry's hunting buffalo. Granted I was focusing on deer. I saw a lot of does and in about 5 days two bucks. However, they were the biggest bucks I had ever seen. We jumped them while hiking. At first I thought they were elk because they were so wide a tall. So if you have a lot of time and want to hike a lot, you might make find a good one. I would be willing to share the exact location if you PM me.

According to the points tally on the DWR sight. There is one person who has 14 points, and that is a nonresident. For residents the max point holder is 13 and there is not very many of those. For someone who has been down on the Henry's during the hunt. Put in for that tag. If you can't hike all over, just take a 4wheeler and go riding around the roads. You will find some respectable bucks just off the road.
This would be the easiest choice ever for me. The henries is the BEST trophy mule deer unit in the lower 48, bar NONE! If you are unfamiliar with the unit, it is fairly easy to learn, and I am sure a few folks from here would assist you on your hunt. The second choice for me be the Pauns, no other deer units come close to these two, IMHO!

Thanks for the input. For those who hint 14 points won't be enough....have you ever looked at this website? http://www.hunterstrailhead.com/ It says I will have 100% chance to draw. I have 13 now, just paid to buy one this year, so if I apply for Henrys next year, I will have 14 then. It's a long way off, but that gives me a full year to get in the best shape of my life, scout, read, pick the brains of all you pros, and look forward to the "Hunt of a Lifetime".....isn't that what hunting is all about? I remember as a kid a month of excitement each year as the hunt approached, and that feeling has been gone for a while, so I am trying to get it back! :D

don't count on it is all. every odds website said that the late dutton was a shoe in for 13 points last year as well. but i will be sitting in a warm house once again while others are out having a grand ole time.

but yes if i could i would be putting in for the heneries that place holds some real pigs.

I know someone who told you how to get a tag for sure in 2007, but you went another route, let that be a lesson for you!

No other unit comes close to Henries for the top-end bucks.
