Blue hands on the Blue ribbon.

One of the reasons this winter has been so phenomenal precipitation wise is because every single time I have a day off, we get a storm. Well. today was no different, but once I got going, I was teased by no rain and a little sunshine. Since I hadn't fished in forever, and had the time, I decided to head up and take a look at the local blue ribbon stream. I arrived at my preferred spot and found a large wall of snow to climb over and then more snow to posthole through to get to the river. I'm a wuss and decided against that but I had noticed an area I occasionally fish that held more access promise. I was able to access the water there. The flow was pretty decent, not too high. As soon as I got in though, a blast of upcanyon wind hit. Come on! It didn't really stop the entire time I was there. That made things difficult and some epically bad casting on my part (the wind ;)) hampered my efforts as well. In spite of conditions and myself, I was able to get a little enjoyable time on the river. While far from fast, I even got some tugs!

Shortly after landing my last fish, the weather intensified to horizontally striking snow pellets. I decided that was enough punishment and called it a day. Like I said, I'm a wuss. It was still nice to sneak away for some quick stream therapy. Needless to say, I had the river to myself.

Addendum: While unpacking my stuff, I was surprised to have a (chilled) DWR creel clerk come by to get some info and my opinion. I was happy to do so and didn't have many complaints to share.🤷‍♂️ It's not like they can do much about crowding. Anyway, they will be out if you are fishing the LoPro and I suppose it is a chance to give an opinion on management there if you see them.

Good job getting out.
You may think you're a wuss but if there weren't any other fishermen you're tougher than most. Although when I tell my wife there weren't any other anglers she says, "that should tell you something". I'm not sure what she meant by that.:)

I'm guessing the white fish pulled harder than the brown.;)

I'd sure like to get a few of the whitefish to smoke. Guess I need to see if I still have a fly rod. Haven't flyfished for 15-20 years now.

My wife tells me the same thing. They are probably on to something...............................

That brown acquitted itself quite well and wasn't a bad fish, although, yes, the whities were larger. It was too cold for high quality streamside fish photography though.

I was converted to the culinary delights of whitefish a few years ago. They don’t fight as hard, but as table fare they are pretty dang good. Much better than trout!!

Yea us too. About 6 years ago we really got into them on a lake we ice fish. Landed about 10 bruisers. We decided to try them, they are so easy to cook, and taste great... so much so we really try and target them over trout when we go ice fishing now. They can be incredibly fickle to try and catch ice fishing. They seem to HATE movement of a jig, I've watched endless whitefish blow out of the area with the slightest twitch of a jig.

I'd really like to find where they go in the summer. I've bought quite a few whitefish specific jigs this winter to try out this summer, I think they are in deeper water, I just dont know how deep... yet.

Best recipe: fillet the fish, put on some aluminum foil skin side down. Sprinkle on some Parmesan cheese, broil in oven for a few minutes, it doesn't take long. Serve. So simple and easy to make, very delicious.

Sounds delicious Dallas! I target them now on our annual trip up the Greys each summer. I still love to catch the Cuts on dries in the evenings but the fish that come back to camp for our Friday fish fry are mostly whitefish now. I actually pack around my 3 wt. for trout but also keep my 5 wt. on hand try try the deeper pools for whites. If the Cuts are tight lipped, the whites are usually more than willing on small hares ears, pheasant tails, and copper John’s.
