Cold Day On The Pond

It was a freezing cold day to be out in the marsh, but goosefreak and I made the best of it. He shot a couple more than I did today, but I went for bigger. You just can't pass up shooting a goose at 20 yards.;-) And I got my 3rd drake cinnamon teal of the season to boot.

Nice work. It was a cold one for sure. I saw more geese flying today than I have for awhile, though I didn't get any quite that close.

I haven't had any luck with the teal lately. Nothing but mallards and pintails today where I was at, which surprised me. I thought I'd be into teal all day today, but we scared them off of our chosen location and they never came back.
Oh, and I'd just like to make sure you know you have a standing invitation to take me out and let me shoot one of those cinnamon teal you keep finding.

You got it! Anytime you are ready. I have seen quite a few of them over the last 2 weeks. The one today wasn't colored up quite as good as the others.
Dang, that's a good looking shoot!

I doubt it was the best retrieve. I own the record for the best goose retrieve in the history of the world. When I was about 14 I was hunting with dad and one of my brothers. A blue goose passed and dad called it over and knocked it down graveyard dead with a load of 7 1/2 shot (lead shot days). I was sitting in the back of the boat and he was in the front of the boat (14' duracraft flatbottom). I was eating a sandwich and heard dad yell "watch out". Next thing I know,,,,,THUD. Right on the seat next to me the goose landed not 12 inches from me! I kept eating my sandwich with one hand, picked up the goose with the other and threw it to him at the front of the boat. Now if that's not the best retrieve ever on a goose I want to hear your story.

I have one that's pretty similar. One opening day when I was a teenager, my dad and I picked a good spot and had a great shoot. We hadn't really practiced shooting much over the summer, so our shooting sucked, and we ran out of all of our duck loads before limiting out. Dad brought five 3 1/2" goose loads, and he let me shoot them at ducks. I hit a Gadwall on the fourth of those, and we headed out into the salt grass to look for it.

After looking around for several minutes, we heard a flock of geese coming our way from the north. We had nowhere to hide, so we crouched down and hoped they wouldn't see us. Keep in mind, I had one shell left in my gun, and I was feeling some pressure to make the shot count if they decided to come over.

They came over. Right over, about 50 yards high. Dad told me to get one. I stood up, took careful aim, and pulled the trigger. The shot flew true, and one bird fell right to where my dad was standing. He jumped back as the goose slammed into the water right where he had been (it caused a splash so big it soaked us both). He bent over, picked it up, and handed it to me.

I have never had a goose fall in my boat, but I have had a few ducks that did. Quite a few geese have fallen close to my layout blind, and seen more than one goose fall on decoys and totally destroy them.

Same year but a week or two before the goose retrieve my dad and brother were in the front of the boat and a flock of green wings came straight in on them, they shot and killed several, I don't remember the exact number but two of the green wings actually fell into the front of the boat both of them hitting my brother. One in the chest and one around the waist area. I laughed my you know what off.
