I got the itch to hunt pheasants yesterday. First time I've really even wanted to go since my lab died in 2018. I headed out solo targeting wild pheasants - I'm not interested in the release sites. I wasn't naïve enough to think it would be easy, but the snow on the ground had me thinking that I might at least have a fighting chance. Here's a concise summary of the day.

Nature Road surface Branch Grey Freezing

Here are the stats:

  • 12.7 miles walked
  • 10 hours spent
  • 15 birds seen
  • 7 birds flushed at close range
  • 5 of the 7 were hens
  • 2 of the 7 were roosters
  • 1 of the roosters didn't offer a shot
  • 1 of the rooster offered me a brief chance at a marginal shot, which I missed
  • 2 sore knees
  • 1 blister on my foot
  • 1 nice day
  • 1 lonely old boy who still misses his lab
