Being a new waterfowl hunter was wondering when do the wma around GSL ice up.Do they freeze really hard and is the hunting with decoys over.Do you hunt them by walking the dikes or still set up decoys.thanks in advance.
You can actually find some places that keep some open water year-round where the ducks flock to. I've found the most success with just a few decoys and no calling whatsoever. Some people actually hunt on the ice and have all sorts of tips and tricks they might be willing to share, but my suggestion is take a few days to scout and just find some open water once ice-up hits.
Lots of guys set up on the Northern WMA's for geese and ducks on the ice. +1 on finding open water.... you do that, you'll find birds. But yeah... guys still set up on the ice and last year it seemed like very very very very minimal calling was important to getting birds to finish. If you don't call at all, then that probably won't hurt anything. 8)
