Hogan,
I can not believe what I am hearing about 500 yard shots. Of course they are not for everyone but if you have been trained to shoot them they are quite effective. Granted I have never shot a 270 more than 200 yards but with my 223 and my 22-250 and even my sons 243 these shots are simple angle and trajectory compensate for wind. Same thing they teach in boot camp to 18 year olds.
Maybe the ethics police should give some things a rest.
Would you be shooting a 500 yard shot just to say you did it or because you honestly couldn't get any closer? Is shooting that far justified for taking a trophy animal, or any animal or would it be better to hold off, get closer to where its more of a supposed "slam dunk" at 200 or 300 yards? Granted, this is for a rifle, not somebody with a muzzleloader or a bow. 8) I'd imagine that any hunter worth their salt could actually get closer than 500 yards.... the only folks that I could see shooting that far are guys that do it all year long, with precision instruments (high power scopes, finely tuned rifles and one he!! of a good rest) that have proven they can take game at those distances and could quite honestly get a lot closer than most of us if they really wanted to.... average Joe out there with some thrown together rifle/scope combo he shot five times at Lee Kay the day before the hunt shouldn't be even thinking about that shot.
This is just an opinion..... I have no doubt that Hogan would get much, much closer if it was possible.... and it appears that based on his first post, that the 500 yard thing is to satisfy his curiousity more than be used in an actual hunting situation.
