Any guesses as to what's going on in this picture? You might have to zoom in to see all the "players" I'll tell the story after some guessing fun.-----SS

I see 5 deer on a hill side......being watched by a huge buck on the right

And two other animals dressed in camo.
I see someone along the tree line in some very unique camo.

Looks like opening morning filmed from my vantage point. The guys on the ridge ran back and forth while the bucks decided which way to go. If guys on top would have split up they would have had a chance. I actually saw five guys on top. All 19 or so bucks made it out safe. We saw two bucks bed down after a guy with a pink bow made a play from the bottom with wind blowing at all the deer. Two bucks watched him walk by and we watched them bed. We made our play two hours later and got within 40 yards before they stood up. Daughter couldn't get a good range before they headed over the top.

I'd say that is the same deer. Interested to hear the story.

One buck was at least a 170" buck maybe better. 9 four points were in that group.
I'd post video but I lost my backpack, spotting scope, tripod, HD camera, kuiu down vest, kuiu Yukon vest, kuiu Yukon pants, Sitka jacket, knife and hunting liscences. All the gear fell out of the can am trunk after we got a flat and we're on our way back to the truck. My daughter didn't shut the trunk good enough. We found the kuiu Yukon jacket pants and Sitka jacket. The rest were dropped in the same area. Everything was in the center of the road. The guys that picked up the backpack will know who's it is when they see the names on the liscenses. If they choose to keep the gear may the bad hunting karma follow them forever.

I'd make every effort to return something like that. Sucks to be me right now. It's taken 10 years to aquire that stuff.

Sorry for the side track of your post. We lost the gear last night miles from the area we hunted opening morning where I filmed what looks to be the same area.

Here's the story.

I was out scouting for elk and spotted a group of 7 bucks feeding on a hillside, a 170" four point, a 150" four point, a wide/tall 4x3, and 4 smaller bucks. While I was watching them the biggest two went on alert, spun, and disappeared into the brush. The other five kept feeding like nothing happened. Then the big 4x3 went on alert and froze in the position shown in the pic. The other four deer kept feeding. At that point I spotted the two hunters emerge from the quakes directly above the deer. One guy was dressed like he was going on a month long backpack hunt in the arctic with several layers of thick clothing and a huge backpack looking very full. Strange for being a mile from the road in an area with no real roadless areas?.

Anyway, these guys are obviously not in stalk mode and don't see the deer that are 40 yards below them. Finally they see the small bucks who are now on alert and it looks like a Chinese fire drill. Mr. Backpack tries to draw his bow but can't with the backpack so he dumps it and tries to reposition for a shot at the small bucks who are now on the move. The bucks stop after going 50 yards and the hunters are now in stalk mode in pursuit. All the while, the big 3x4 is frozen watching the little bucks draw the hunters farther away. Finally when they are 100 yards away, he turns and disappears into the brush.

Amazing to watch through my scope a mile away. I don't know if they ended up killing any of the small bucks but I guarantee that they had no idea how close they were to some very nice bucks.

This all happened on the Current Creek unit.------SS

Let's hold out hope that someone will do the right thing. That's a huge loss man.---SS
Here's a pic that shows the biggest buck right before he disappeared. Sucky pic but the best I could get at a mile through the haze. Find the obvious buck in the sun, then look in the shadows right above him. Ghostly sucker.------SS

ha ha I think its the same deer. Its the same unit lol. I found the camera tonight after I saw this post. I must have taken it out of my pack earlier this week. Here's a piece of the clip of the 170" buck as it exited the county to the north. The rest of the bucks exited to the east to the top of the ridge. I didn't get video of the bucks that exited to the east because we were in hunting mode and I forgot I had the camera. Funny thing is the first group of four points that went over the top to the east were less then 70 yards away from a guy on what looks like that ridge. It looked like he was on a death march to get to the guy with the heavy back pack.

SW,

Those are the same bucks.......that's funny. That guys backpack is too much. What the heck is he carrying around? I've gone on lots of 50 milers with a pack half that size. Anyway, I think those bucks are pretty safe so far.-------SS
Those bucks are safe if those guys are hunting them lol Total SNAFU! If we still had state wide hunting I believe I would have killed one of the 150" bucks. Lindsay just took to long trying to get a good range and nocking her arrow.

Its good to see some actual bucks on a general rifle unit.
It's pretty amazing that you guys were hunting so close to each other. It wouldn't surprise me at all to know many of us have hunted the same areas.
SW, I hope you end up finding your stuff.
I also met Wileywapiti within a mile or so of the same area.

I guarantee that those guys 40 yards away were having a whole hell of a lot more fun chasing those smaller bucks than you were having looking at them through your spotting scope from a mile away too....!
Be honest, Is that you with the king kong pack SW? Haha
It's better to have a big pack like that then no pack at all which is where I am now

I bet they weren't. First off, that pack looks really heavy. Second, the deer circus was just a sideshow to the nice bulls I was looking at for my daughters hunt that starts soon. Third, my spotting scope is really nice and I like looking through it. Fourth, no matter what I'm doing, I'm generally having a lot of fun. Fifth, I hope they were having fun, that's what it's all about.-------SS

I wouldn't mind running into SW sometime. Wouldn't mind running into Ridge either but I probably don't get steep n deep enough.------SS
