I'm looking to by a new gas powered ice auger. How much power do you need? Is a 1.2 hp 8" enough to get the job done on most Utah lakes or would a 1.8 hp or larger be a better choice. I haul my gear out on a sled and don't want one that weighs a ton.
Any auger with a Tecumseh moter will do a good job.
Strike Master and Eskimo both use them in most augers.
The lower HP engines will be geared down, so they will cut slower, but will still cut holes with ease.
I would say get the most HP you can afford and you will be fine.
Be sure to follow the manufactures guide for fuel and for off season storage.
Always use fuel stabelizer in every tank of fuel,
I like to run my auger out of fuel at the end of the season and store it dry.
