Road Hunting with the Wife and Kiddos

1531 Views 9 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  hazmat
I'll be headed up (Wasatch West) tonight to see if we can get the wife a little buck right off the road. We will have two toddlers with us, hence the road hunting. We went up a couple nights ago but couldn't manage to find a buck on public ground that wasn't 2 miles away or didn't have an orange vest hot on his trail. I'm not accustomed to road hunting, but I'm actually finding it more difficult than backcountry hunting. Anyway, I'm not above asking for forky sightings. Please send me a PM if you've got any hot tips or good roads to drive ;-). Thanks.

I'll admit it. I like a good road hunt! About all we do on the rifle hunt with my wife's 75 year old grandpa. Good luck to you.
Good luck!!
Just don't look 'em in the eye when you drive by!:)
Good luck. Sounds like a fun outing for the family.
Just don't play any rap music, it tends to scare deer.
Thanks for all the replies and PM's... and thanks for teaching me the nuances of road hunting (avoid eye contact, music selection, etc). I had a good laugh. You guys are awesome. Sounds like from the PM's we've been looking in all the right places... us and half of Utah County . Lots of people running around. We had a great time though, saw tons of deer, but for the life of me couldn't put head gear on any of them. Maybe the rap music was my problem... We will keep at it. I appreciate all the response.
I'm pretty sure we saw a new road hunter driving up Diamond Fork Canyon every 5 minutes yesterday. You've really got to get lucky with your timing when there's that kind of a crowd out and about. It was the motivation I needed to walk a few miles, though...not that it helped.
I'll also add in that general area we saw lots of bucks with tiny (less than 6") antlers. They can be really hard to id

Try a little Chris Ledoux or Some George Strait, It works every time.
Call me crazy but I passed on a quit a few of nice bucks opening day. Only to smack this little guy. Only because all of my girls were with me and my 7 year old daughter was really really really wanting to get a deer on our family trip
