There are lots of guys that will run dogs anywhere, if you pay the fee.

One of the tough parts of pursuit hunts is this very thing. Good luck! Maybe a houndsman that didn’t get a pursuit permit would be willing to do it for practice and the cost of fuel?

I know a guy but he already committed to his college student hunter for the season. Are you sure you're not a single parent or a veteran?

I am not a single parent or veteran. I have put all my money to school and was hoping to find someone who wants to practice working their dogs or is reasonably priced.

Good luck to ya. I think if you network enough you should be able find someone. My experience with houndsman is that they are usually willing to help a tag holder out if they haven't already committed to anyone since they are going to be out chasing anyway. If you find the right person they may help you out just be prepared to cover their expenses gas , food for them and their dogs etc and play by their rules (they usually have the type of bear they will want you to kill, no sows for example).

I was fortunate to hook up with a great houndsman through a friend at my work a couple years ago and he helped me get a great mtn lion. I know he will be running bears on the lasals this year but I will check with him and see if he can fit you in since San Juan is next door. I'll send you a PM if anything positive comes of it.

You never did say which season. The early spring season is open pursuit so a houndsmen doesn't need to be accompanied by a harvest tag holder to chase a release bear. Dogs aren't allowed during the summer bait season, only in the early fall hunt would a houndsman need to be with a kill tag holder to chase. Late fall is once again open pursuit.

Utah's guide laws are such that one can only accept $100 or less in compensation for helping out on a hunt without having to be licensed by DOPL. Those that are licensed are the ones charging $3,000-$4,000, those that aren't run the risk of getting busted if they accept more than the $100, particularly if they don't already know you. It costs me about $500 a trip for gas and groceries to go down to San Juan for a weekend, so monetarily it's a loser.

So while at times I may have charity in my heart, it is often tempered by the dog**** on my boots.
