Satisfaction

I like how the state posts the hunter satisfaction scores along with the harvest data. Ya, it's not perfect but I find it can be useful when looking at different choices going into the draw season. Since we have the new 2022 harvest data posted I decided to do some quick 10 key work last night. I am in the elk game so I only did this number crunch regarding elk. I did a simple average of the satisfaction per hunt per season type. All Units are weighted the same. These scores are on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being least satisfied with the hunt and 5 being most satisfied. Here is what I came up with:

Archery: 3.72
Muzzleloader: 4.02
Early Rifle: 4.09
Late Rifle: 3.96
Multi Season: 3.54

Mid Season: 3.60
September Archery: 3.39
HAMS: 3.70

CWMU: 4.52

These surprised me a little. Especially the Multi-season hunt. I think guys have such high expectations and put so much pressure on themselves it diminishes the hunt for them. The high satisfaction on the CWMU doesn't really surprise me as they are including guided paying clients in this so I can see that being skewed. I wish they would only list the satisfaction of the public hunter, I would bet those scores would drop.

Using this along with harvest stats I would say the best value for your points is Muzzleloader and Late Rifle. The success % is comparable on these hunts to early rifle. Maybe if I find some time I can add in average success % to the discussion.

Interesting stuff

People are never happy, and won’t ever be completely satisfied. I’ve literally seen guys standing over a 360 bull on a 330 bull unit, that were disappointed it wasn’t a 380+ bull.

guys want an easy kill on a book animal, the first 10 minutes of the hunt. If that doesn’t happen, their attitude of satisfaction drops at a rapid pace.

my criteria for a 5 is:
-did I have fun?
-did I see game that was in an area I could access them if I wanted to?
-did I have an opportunity?
-did I fill a tag?
If I answered “yes” to 2 or more of those questions, it’s a 5.

If you are familiar with the unit you’re hunting, the late rifle hunt is the easiest hunt this state has for bulls. If you aren’t familiar with the unit, it most likely can be a nightmare.
You might never draw that coveted tag with Utah's point system.

I know several hunters who took points to the grave.
Much of that was a choice for people with a lot of points. If you have 15 points, you are definitely choosing to not hunt bulls if you all you want was just the opportunity and experience to chase a mature bull elk in your life time

Unless you are going after OIL tags.
Since the conversation has been about LE elk, I assumed you were talking about that still. You are correct. You might not ever draw a OIL tag in utah. Thankfully there are many other great hunts available to enjoy during your lifetime while hopefully waiting your turn for a OIL tag.

On the LE hunt side, the vast majority of hunters in Utah will put in for one unit and one weapon only until the either draw the tag or stop hunting.

Could they draw a tag in another unit quicker, quite possibly. They could also change weapon choice, but they want that one unit and one weapon.

You can see that here on the forum when we get a new resident member asking about a unit that they have never step foot into.

My brother in law was almost like what I described. He only wanted to hunt with a rifle but he was willing to learn new places, as long as he could hunt deer with a rifle
While I respect that choice by those hunters, it certainly cost them several opportunities at other types of great hunts during their life time because of that decision. If you become proficient at all 3 weapon types and don’t mind exploring the state (or states) and learning new areas and trying new things, the possibilities are dam near endless. Even in today’s disaster of trying to get multiple tags in your pocket every year.

Unfair? Not buying that. It’s not unfair DallanC got to experience two deer tags per season and I don’t because the time we each were born. (He’s talked about that numerous times, that’s why I use his name.) Opportunities change over time in all aspects of life. It’s not unfair, it’s called life. Is it fair you could get a mortgage 18 months ago for just over 3% and today it’s over 6%? Is that unfair to those that weren’t looking for a mortgage then but are now? Unfair…hmmmm, nope. Was it unfair my older brother couldn’t big game hunt until he was 16, I got to do it at 14, and kids today can at 12?

Fair is such a hard word and I don’t think anyone really is concerned with “fairness.” When you say full random draw favors nobody, so it’s fair, explain how fair it would be to take points away from people.

The world isn’t “fair” and it never will be. Things change and that is just how it is. I bought my own LL when I was 13 years old. Was it “fair” I’d had a paper route at that time for almost 5 years and had my own money to be able to do this kind of thing and my buddies didn’t? Is it fair my mom doesn’t have to do hunter education if she wants to hunt but my wife and daughters would?

Unfair. Yeah, not buying that.

Lastly, the LL issue has absolutely nothing to do with point creep on LE hunts. It’s completely irrelevant. The two are not connected in any way.
It’s unfair, because he watched MeatBeater on Netflix 4 years ago and decided he wanted to be a real man and become a hunter. But after using his google machine that he so heavily relies on to be somewhat relevant in any conversation he wants to insert himself in, he soon became to understand that while he pizzed away those years doing whatever it is he did for fun, mostly hiking and driving around a Subaru in Zion’s NP, there were many people who were investing their time in buying points every year and taking advantage of all opportunities available to ANYONE who wanted to pursue them. Not it’s not “fair” because he probably won’t draw a OIL bighorn sheep tag. He probably won’t draw a SJ LE elk tag and he probably won’t draw any other tags that it takes 10+ points to draw as of right now. While during the same time of his attempts to get lucky and pull a tag, many others will have consistent draw success on great tags because they have been investing and waiting their turn in line. That’s why it’s not “fair”.

People were just replying to you on the LL topic. Nobody was discussing it outside of the context you fabricated. And if you go back and review the posts, you’ll see it was absolutely about the bonus point system. (Half to the highest point holders, half random...that is the bonus point system, not general deer draw system.)

Don’t be disappointed. I’m trying to help you here. You’re off the rails on this discussion. You’re completely out of context arguing something that is irrelevant to hunter satisfaction or the LE elk system.

But proceed down this road if you must! If I haven’t convinced you of the error by now, I won’t ever.
Get ready! Next he’s gonna throw out his diagnoses of a mental health disorder that you must have because he has no other logical tactics in his defense arsenal! He’s probably googling your symptoms on WebMD right now as we speak
I don't think that DWR had the right to sell future hunting rights for temporary gain. They saddled game managers for as much as 80 or so years with that ignorant decision. What if the IRS said they have a money problem and offered lifetime tax exemption. Or troubled Sherriff agencies sold lifetime get out of jail cards to solve a temporary fiscal shortage, DWR should void the LL obligation and buy out remaining LL holders.
I’m certain you’d be signing a different tune if you had a LL. I’ve never seen a person with a LL be an advocate to get rid of them for the remaining those who do still have them.
You'll find it you read the thread I actually agree and say so explicitly.
I think you missed the part where most people don’t care to read certain members posts…
