I just read about the sportsman's permit on the dwr website....I was just curious if anyone had ever drawn one or if they had known anyone that had drawn one. I was also wondering everyone's opinion if it was worth it to put in for it and if you did draw the permit does it allow you to hunt with any weapon and all over the state in any LE unit etc etc. I just have a lot of questions and was looking for some info.

Your chances are 1 in however many people apply, usually in the high thousands. Is it worth it? Ask the guy who draws it. I look at it as a donation.

One good friend drew the desert sheep tag, and another got the elk a few years ago. is it worth it ???? only if you want the same opportunities. the only way to insure you won't get one is to not try. at the conservation expo last spring i paid like 450.00 buckaroos , to try for one of those tags, and the odds were horrible. it no different trying to get a sportsmans tag. only its way cheaper to go sportsmans than others. I plan to try till i get too old , won't it be awesome to get one though. to my thinking it is definately worth it. but it isn't likely to happen. i would rather spend cash like this than go to vegas and give it to some already rich casino owner.

I hear ya there......how about the other ?s I had....can you really hunt anywhere you want? What is the cost to put in?

Cost is $5 per species. You can apply for as many species as they offer. I believe they offer one tag per big game species: bull elk, buck deer, bull moose, mountain goat, desert bighorn, buck antelope, etc. The tag holder can hunt I believe from the end of August - December 31 on any public land on any unit. I'm sure some one will correct me with the exact season dates and regulations from the proclamation, but that is the jist of it.
