If you were hunting moose with a bow would you stalk in and try not to get busted or would you walk in slow to get a shot? It is a big debate around here. Some say that if you sneak up on a moose you could startle him and he will run off. I have heard that if you move in slow on a moose he will just sit and look at you. What would you do stalk or walk?

I have heard that their eye sight is not that good. Just what I have heard. I have also noticed that if the moose can see you and they know you are a human, they are not generally afraid, but if they were startled they would run. In my opinion, I would do like the hunters on the T.V. Take a wooden oar and hold it sideways over your head and walk in too the moose so he sees you. If you try this I would like to know how it turns out! So in conclusion, I would walk in. But stalking is so much more fun.

I was sitting at a watering hole last year during the Elk rifle season, waaaayyyy off the beaten path on the North Slope and had the biggest Shiras Moose I have ever seen come within 20 yards of me broadside & stop. Later in the day, his younger brother came by while I was walking down the mountain.

Both presented the perfect archery shot. So you can score both ways, I believe.

Walk.

And, I'll add one more dimention. Wear regular cloths not cammo. And dont worry about your smell. (you can shower once a week like you normally do and they won't care)

G.Fred Asbell wrote a story about his goat hunt in CO. It seemed he was having a hell of a time getting to within bow range of the goats. He was being as sneeky and as cammo minded as he could but the goats always kept him well out of range. Then, one day while trying another stalk some people dressed in regular LL Bean hiking gear walkwed right up on the herd and took a bunch of pictures without so much as drawing a second glance from the goats. He switched to regular cloths and walked right up to the herd and shot the biggest billy at 15 yards. Whoda thunk....

Well I have to wear hunters orange cause it is the rules of the ranch so I am sure that everything in a 20 mile radius will know that I am coming. And the smell, I shower every other week last time I checked (o.k. maybe every two weeks) *OOO* _/O

just act like you would if you were out hiking around, it seems to work the best for taking pictures. Even out grouse hunting I have always just walk toword them to see just how close they will let my get.
