Ok so I’ve heard people talk about sweet potato pie being a thanksgiving staple, and I’ve never had it until today when my brother made one. So I got a couple questions. And I get that people will think differently about this, but I think this will be a good conversation.
Is it supposed to be a dessert or a side dish?
Do you think it’s better than pumpkin pie?
You usually put whipped cream on pumpkin pie, what do you think about putting marshmallows on top of a sweet potato pie or is that a sin?
I’ve heard it’s a Christmas thing in some states, is is an Utah thing too?

I'd call it a tie.

I don't care for the marshmallows but put them on often for quests and family members.

A whole lot of people don't realize that sweet potatoes and yams are two different animals.
Yams (with or without marshmallows) are a side.
Sweet potato pie is a dessert.
At least that's how I was taught.

It's funny to me how many don't care for Candied Yams. I have always loved the dish and it was a dish at every Thanksgiving dinner.
Sweet Potato Pie can be hit and miss. The best pie I've had was in South Carolina. I'd say it's a dessert.
