Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. I’ve always viewed it with four important Fs. Food-Football-Family-Fishing

I could do without the first three if I had to, but that fourth one is really imperative to a great Thanksgiving. It was cold mornings, but otherwise decent weather and not very crowded, all things considered.

I’ve had trips where I’ve caught more fish, but there were still PLENTY of fish caught. It was just a great weekend out with my brothers and a nephew. Here is a sampling of the take.

This may not change your desire to want to punch me or not, but that is most definitely not an NBA-related hat! I'm a Bonneville High alum, and a proud Laker for life. They kind of suck these days, but in my Uncle Rico years, we slapped people around pretty good!

Let's be honest, the four layers of Kuiu I have on the top cost more than the waders, but not quite as much as your Sitka setup. 😜

That's actually the line that tethers my net to my pack. I can't afford to lose another net!

But yes, a Ross reel was used this trip. It almost didn't make the cut, though. Had I had time to take my new reel to get the new line I have put on it before we left, the Ross would have been purely in a backup role. It's served me well for 20+ years now, but it may be getting time to go a different direction in my day to day fishing activities. But then again, I really like that reel!

We used to head out the day after Thanksgiving to get some early season ice action in on the Boulder. Haven't done it for quite a few years...probably just not as excited about ice these days because this would have been the perfect year to go for it! Looks fun.

How can you abandon such a great reel?

I've had mine for over 35 years and it is just like a Timex "takes a liking and keeps on ticking". I send mine in every few years and they clean them up replace any parts that are worn at no charge other than the shipping. The reel is almost bulletproof.

New is not always better, just saying.

TOgden, nothing wrong with this reel! PBH talks like the Ross CLA is some top of the line reel, but it’s just a reel. It’s been great for me for a long time. I’ve never sent it in, I ought to look into that! Do you just contact their customer service when you do it?

PBH, Hardy is out of the question. Can you imagine how much fishing a Sage rod with Hardy reel combined with wearing Simms waders would increase my catch rate? It would be unethical it would be so unfair for those poor fish. I’m guessing we’d get a 20 page thread on UWN demanding the wildlife board limit my technology with lots of name calling. We’ll leave that to the hunting pages, this is just fishing.

It's been a few years since I sent mine in and they are under new ownership so things may have changed. I contacted them and they gave me a return authorization number and I sent my two Gunnison reels along with all my spare spools without the line on them. They cleaned them all up and replaced the pins in the spools and any worn parts on the reels. It only took them about a week and I had them back.

Ross paid for the return postage.

I'm just jealous 'Nilla. You have all the cool gear.

I'm still using a home-made (st. croix blank?) rod (or the Bargain Cave Cabelas rod), with a really inexpensive piscifun reel (or an old Orvis reel that I hate). I have a couple cheap Albright reels too, and the old trusty Pflueger medalist reels....


Imagine the fish I could catch using top-of-the-line equipment like yours!
