I've heard from a few folks that it has been good right now for trout.
That said, the fall bite is usually best from the first week of October to ice up.

 

Like Catherder said, it is good right now. I have a friend that went there yesterday with three other guys on pontoons. They fished from 8:00 to 3:30 and picked up over 100 fish. They were all fly fishing.
There is quite a bit of algae in the water now so it will only get better when the water cools and the water clears up.

 

You can go catch all of the useless Cutts you care to catch, basically any time of year - they are all in the 15" - 19" range, they fight like an old sock, and they have to be released. Enjoy!!

 

That's your call but a bunch of chunky rainbows are showing up as well.

On second thought, you are right. Stay the heck away! (I'm hoping to go in a couple of weeks.)

Picked up a silver, two reds, and a lame Cutt so far.
If you come up here try to avoid the Cutts, they fight about as hard as a hooked sock sadly.

 

One of those 100 fish caught yesterday was a 24" rainbow, but if you don't like Cutts, I wouldn't go.

Air temp after dropping down to reservoir from Daniels this morning at 5:45am hit a quick little pocket of air at 35 degrees.

 

I fished Strawberry with a friend about 4 weeks ago. We caught 18 trout in about 3 hours, 15 were Rainbows. We were surprised to not have caught as many Cutts.

 

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with where you are on Strawberry if you catch more rainbows or Cutts but at least this year I have caught more rainbows than I ever have up there.

You guys are right about the Cutts not fighting as hard as rainbows but an 18" Cutthroat on a fly rod is still a lot of fun.

 

Really appreciate the responses and advice. I've fished Strawberry earlier in the season last year and this year, but not close enough to ice-off for all of the excitement. I like catching fish, and while I agree the rainbows are better fighters, I won't turn down a cutt that is willing to bite. I'll look into planning a trip up there in the coming weeks. So many options for the Fall. I wish it was six months long.

 

My best memory at Strawberry was with my dad during a crappy deer hunt. We fished out of float tubes around chicken creek instead of going hunting. There’s something magical about that place when the fog is lifting and the fish are jumping all around you.
So I’m going to say the 3rd weekend of October. But really if you know the lake you can catch fish all year but I tell everyone you haven’t really fished the berry until you’ve gone out in the fog.
