Here is a little bit of information on the wolverine that the DWR trapped and collared a year ago this week.

#TBT to when we captured and collared a wolverine for the first time in Utah! It happened a year ago this week, so we wanted to share some cool things we learned. In a span of just over three weeks, this small-but-fierce traveler:

Covered 214 miles.

Migrated an average of .43 miles each hour. (Although on some occasions, it covered up to 3 miles in an hour — as the crow flies — in areas with over five feet of snow!)

Crossed from one side of the Uintas to the other four different times.

Obviously it was in much better shape than I.

Kinda too bad it met its demise.

What was it wondering about? Probably wondered how it ended up wandering around in Utah. Sorry, Critter, my pedantic inner grammar/spelling Nazi can't be contained!

I know nobody will believe me, but I'd put my hand to the bible and swear to it, i think I saw a wolerine out in Gorden Creek WMA some years ago. 2017 or 2018. I've only been out to that area once, scouting for turkey. I forget exactly where I was, but there was a couple water falls, and an old cabin. I saw this critter on my way back. I was watching where I was walking, saw some movement out of the top corner of my eye, looked up, and saw this dark brown, almost bear like color, thing. It was long, low to the ground, and large.. I think i was maybe 100 to 200 yards away when I saw it. It didn't walk like a bear, and it was unlike ANYTHING i had ever seen. I went up to where it had crossed, and saw some tracks that were also, unlike anything I had ever seen. I might have some video of the tracks somewhere, at the time I was using an action camera i think, so the quality is probably ****ty. Most likely i deleted the footage, as I didn't keep backups of anything back then. While it was something new to me, I figured it was something that's always been here, and chaulked it up as something cool to see, then went about my way and thought nothing more of it.

Rumor has it died of un-natural cause when it wandered into an area it was not welcome.

Maybe the DWR should "introduce" the Wolverine into Utah. That's better than a pack of Wolves I'd think.

I did a couple of searches and can't find anything on it.

Wolverine

During the northern RAC meeting they showed the track of the little feller since they released him. Those short little legs are getting him around.

I've heard from sources within the DWR and USU that the wolverine's collar quit uploading data a few weeks back for whatever reason.

From what I have heard about wolverines he quite possibly ate it.

Maybe so. I would think they went and looked around the last known area.

K, so I'm a former a DWR employee (chief post hole digger, fence stretcher, ditch cleaner, and hay hauler from the mid to late 70's at Hardware Ranch), but I'm also a houndsman that has volunteered my time and dogs to the DWR and researchers from USU over the decades to further the study of bear and cougar (though I routinely turn down any compensation). So I do have several close friends in both agencies. I've never asked for specifics, and I wouldn't expect them given to me regardless. What is known is that the wolverine collar went dead in close proximity to the wintering sheep herd in the same general area in which it had already depredated sheep, beyond that is nothing on my part is merely speculation, though I also have heard rumors.

When I was a lad in the 80s we saw one up by Jeremy Ranch on the road back to East Canyon.

We reported it to the DWR and they came to investigate and took plaster casts of the prints.

Dunno whether they ended up tracking it farther or not but it was cool to see it running around a meadow up there

Lonehunter THINKS he saw a wolverine, in a year he doesn’t know in a place he doesn’t remember where it was at.

This is more reliable than many of the Bigfoot sightings, so I’ll believe it!

I've covered a lot of ground in many areas. It's true I may not remember exactly where i was sometime, or when, but that one stuck out to me. Never saw anything like it before, or since. Unfortunately I no longer have the video or pictures to backup it up. I can't say I care, really. I know what I saw, and i've no vested interest in proving something from 5 freaking years ago on an internet forum.

I crossed the Unitas once this past summer and it took me 7 days! He must stop only to eat a serious amount of calories.
