Utak Lake 5/21/23

Wife wanted to get out, so we headed to the Provo harbor. $20 to drive in now:oops::mad: What the hell? The lake is filling, so it's not "shrinkflation" just having to pay for the crap paper and new pavement I guess.

Anyway, we fished the south dike along the river channel across from the little sand beach. She landed ONE mudcat that promptly went back. Moved to the north dike, not a bite one. Spent three hours drowning bait from worms, shrimp, cutbait, seafood mix, casting jigs and only one little mudcat.

She got tired of the gnats swarming around her and getting stuck in her sunscreen, so she wanted some mexican food. Hit a place in Provo on University Ave. that had a 4.8 star rating. Don't remember the name of the place, but they had some smoking pits along the side of the building. I won't go back again after finding myself sitting on the throne at 10pm and she was up early (3am) doing the same.

Guess you call this a true "chitty fishing trip".

At least you didn't get skunked! LOL

Check out a yearly state park pass. With the senior rate and being pro-rated by month it should be a good price.

If you’re out that way again and want Mexican food, hit Casa Victoria on Center Street west of Geneva.

It’s not your traditional “Mexican food” that all tastes the same like we’ve become accustomed to, but it’s really good!

I love that place. We live just a few miles north of there and go frequently.

Oh, and in the name of keeping this on topic, we had similar luck on Saturday morning. Me and four kids fishing and not a single bite in two hours.
I almost took the kids there yesterday. Sounds like they didn’t miss much playing in the pool all day instead.
Once the Immodium kicks in and you may be inclined for another trip, the white bass were hitting at the outer dike on Saturday afternoon. Silver spinners or chartreuse curly tail jigs. I also found some chunky bluegills that were playing but I'll keep that location "proprietary". I also know the BFT guys had a pretty good catfish bite Saturday morning at a get-together they held.

+1 on the parks pass if one fishes regularly at the State parks.

Sorry about the Blowout.

Is the senior pass prorated? Our annual pass wasn't this year when we bought it in March nor is it online. But they did prorate ours last year when we bought it in the middle of summer but they said it was only until December that they would do so.

Still worth every penny even at $125. Between fishing and taking our little girl swimming it's well worth the investment. Not to mention our state park system is pretty good in general.
I bought this years pass in January so I don't know. Maybe last year was the only time they pro-rated them with changing from 12 months to January to December.

We also went to provo marina Saturday, Took the boat just north of the north arm there and got 26 channel cats between 9am and 2 pm.
I hit the East Mill Run, UL SP and Jordan River pump house for white bass last Thurs evening. Landed 2 white bass…1 at Mill Run and 1 at the pump house in 3 hrs of fishing. Lots of people fishing, but the catching was poor all around from what I saw. I’ll probably give it a try again in the next couple days to see if more fish are in. With the extra water, they do have more space to spread out, so might be a little more difficult to find them.
From first had experience I'd say the whitebass run is pretty much over till the fall when they stack up in the harbors

I'd say your right. But, the bigger ones are in now if you cull them.

I'll be heading back out early Friday morning to my secret/favorite spot that only 10,000 people know of. I know I can catch a large taco meal (20 or so) in about 30-45 minutes.

If that is so, then they went early this year (which with all the water, who knows). I usually do well from now thru at least the first week of June.

I think the males stacked up a week or so ago staging and waiting for the females to show up. That's what I was hearing anyway. Those "bigger ones" taxi is talking about are the ladies.

I would be surprised cuz the walleye still spawned even though the water was cooler. I went to a few spots and its slim pickins on the Whitties at the moment and the catfish are full of eggs and 2' deep
Almost all of the 16-18 white bass I caught on Saturday afternoon were males that were actively jizzing, so I don't think I would say the spawn is over. The problem though is that likely due to reduced population and maybe the flooding and river flow changes, it hasn't seemed like there have been very large congregations of fish anywhere and the fish that are there come and go. There were apparently a few in the old river channel for a few days, then it has been dead for the past couple weeks. Certain spots have had a few one day then nothing the next.

The new delta has absolutely changed things for the white bass. This year will likely be kind of a bust overall, but maybe by 2029 they’ll have that project done and I’ll actually be able to use the public land trails that have been jacked up the last 3 years.

Quick update. Day off today and I stopped by the lake between tasks and fished for a little while. A friend and I needed some white bass for an upcoming catfish trip. My honeyhole had a lot of debris in the water so I moved to another reliable spot. It wasn't fast but I was able to get what I needed in about 45 minutes. Kept 6 for bait. 2 gravid females and 4 jizzing males, so there are still some spawning. Admittedly, it isn't as easy as some years, but not out of realm of possible to get some tacos, (or bait) if you would like.

I’m gonna hit it Fri or Sat and will post results. They definitely seem to be fewer and more spread out.

Conspiracy theory....It's the Northern Pike eating all the white bass.

I'll be gathering some taco fillets and kitty bait Friday morning.
