After being together 24 year my wife decided she wanted to see what hunting was all about. I was able to get a control doe tag she went with me on that, we was able to get that tag filled the first night she went. I drew a cwmu and she said she wanted to go with me on that, ok sounds great to me! She was very sick but went and toughed it out, first morning we found a decent 3x3 and she wanted me to take it, I couldn't get a good shot so we made a plan for that night. Well we got hit with snow so we spent the rest the day in the trailer. We went up Wednesday morning and no 3 point seen a few small bucks sparring and chasing does so we sat and watched for a awhile. My wife was wanting to get in the truck to warm up. Just then a doe had gotten up in the draw below us, following behind was a 4x4. I decided to take him, one shot with a 7mm and he dropped in his tracks. My wife was more excited than I was, I think she's hooked. When we got down the draw to clean him I said something about not being big enough to mount, she says are you kidding me this is my first hunt ever and you will get him mounted. What a great memory to have with my wife! And who am I to argue with her. She's going to be taking her hunter safety before the end of the year.
I have lesser bucks mounted... When I look at them on the wall I think about how much effort I had to exert either to get them down or get them off of the mountain. As hunting season rolls around it puts me into a state of stasis where I am ready to take on the world to down my next one to come.
I should clarify, my wife has never been a huge fan of my le elk I had mounted a few years ago. So when we got down to this buck I really didn't think she'd like another shoulder mount. I was elated when she said she wanted this buck mounted to remember her first deer hunt, I think this will be a memory both of us will remember for years to come. I'm sure if I would've taken the smaller 3x3 it would be at the taxidermist as well.
I love stories like these. I would love to take my wife along on my hunts, but she won't go. I showed her this story. She pointed out that you all have been married 24 years. We are only at 17 years. She says I have a few more years to wait!
