How's it shaping up elsewhere in Utah? Way too early to judge snowpack but the cold & snow are coming in waves down here. Will be interesting to see if warm back up in Cedar after this next storm. We normally have a mild spell between the snow around Halloween and then Thanksgiving; but this year seems to want to be colder and more precip than we've experienced in a while.

Not ready for snow again myself but it will be what it will be and our area and soils could use whatever we can get.

I looked into flood insurance on my home a few years ago. All flood policies have a 6 month waiting period before they take effect, so running out today to try and get it will do you no good. It is also really expensive.

FEMA passed a rule that was going to require flood insurance on homes in my area unless the city improved the dikes on the river. Still waiting to see how that works out.

There is some level of concern about flooding for me, but not anxiety level. I am told by old timers that in the big floods of the early 80s, multiple feet of water covered the fields that used to reside where my house now sits. I have also been told we would never see another water year like 1983 again, yet here we are. Absolutely nothing I can do about any of that, so I’ll just make sure my pontoon boat is ready to get filled and have some rods on hand and ready to get some fishing in if that happens.

With most areas of Utah we are not to close to the spring of 1983 with total SWE. The headlines are referring to YTD SWE. We also don't have the history of high years the 2 years prior.

Can there still be problems? Sure but it is not quite the history making event most reports are stating. There is capacity to hold a lot of water in most reservoirs. Overall 2011 is a better barometer as far as total SWE. It all depends on the next 6 weeks or so.

With the storage capacity of Jorddanelle and Deer Creek along with the GSL being as low as it is I highly doubt that there will be a problem with Utah Lake like there was back in 83, even if all the water comes down at once. One has to remember that Jorddanelle Reservoir was just in the engineering stage in 83.

Anybody have a source to read about the relevant floods in 1983? I know the general history of '83 but I have never read anything specific about the Utah Lake area. Would love to learn about it.
Oh I’m much more worried about the ground water table and what it could do than I am the lake. But again, there is nothing I can do except get ready to fish!

Not only does the GSL have more room for water, Utah Lake is low right now. (I’m addition to increased holding capacity up stream.)

I was in a meeting many years ago talking about what possible dam failures at Deer Creek and Jordanelle would look like in my area. Let’s just hope the “Big One” doesn’t hit on the dam at Jordanelle!

Don't know about any "history" on the 83 flooding, but I was there and living it.

From Provo, all the way to Spanish Fork, water was up to I-15 and in the median. They built earthen berms along the freeway to try and keep it from flooding out and closing down.
Where Sprinkler Supply is, the boat shop, trailer sales, etc. along the west side of I-15, had at least 2' of standing water. I've always said to myself, "what if 1983 comes again?" I would hope the developer had a great plan for such an event. Guess it's only time and we will see.

I know the carp bashing was supreme that spring! We would use pitchforks, ball bats, golf clubs and hit the alfalfa field and take out hundreds of them. It stunk when the waters receded, but it sure made a good fertilizer after running the plow over it.

Here is a little article about it.

Search Utah lake flooding and more comes up although a lot of it is SLC.
Back in the 60's Utah Lake would regularly rise up to the freeway and all the farmers fields along the lake would be flooded. Made for some fantastic carp shooting. I ruined more cedar shaft arrows by shooting into spawning groups of carp than I can imagine. There would be a bunch of them and it was no problem hitting 3 or 4 of them with a single arrow.

But like you said all of the homes and businesses along the freeway and down where they Provo Delta is at was flooded with a couple feet of water. I was working out of Price and ended up going down to the Richfield area. The county road department were tearing bridges out all over the place. I gave a bunch of small cable cutters away that spring. I asked them to cut the cable that was on the bridge instead of just ripping it off with a backhoe. I still had to fix things in the end but it was a clean cut and not a mess.

I lived it also, many many hours of Scout hours stuffing and placing sand bags.
The carp bashing was epic in Lehi below Inlet Park ( btw, stupidest name for a park that is not only an outlet but also start of The Jordan River…) and Bluffdale.
Don’t forget about I-80 being covered in water.
I don’t think that could ever happen again with the Jordan River straightened (very sad) and Bangerters pumps ready to turn on at the flip of a switch.
Well, we are going to shatter the 1983 record for statewide SWE this year. We are already there for the last 20 years.

I have not complained about snow or the weather a single time this year, and I’m still grateful for all this wet stuff, but I just went and shoveled my driveway and walks in a pair of shorts as a protest to this current storm.

We had a storm come through my neck of the woods in Colorado on Wednesday and gave us a 10" layer of wet heavy snow.

There was no shoveling it. The bottom 3" was pure water and it was heavy. My neighbor tried to use his snowblower on it and gave up before he even made a full pass on his driveway. I did try to shovel a little but when I saw how wet it was I gave up and fired up the 4 wheeler with the plow on front. I took care of my driveway and then headed to the neighbors drive. The town didn't even get out for the sidewalks like they usually do so I did a quarter mile of sidewalk before I parked it and came inside for another cup of coffee.
These numbers are just wild. If these were in December after a series of storms, that would be one thing. But this is March 25th!

What a winter. There is A LOT of water in them there hills.

Kinda off topic, but I gotta ask. What did backcountry go and do to get himself banned? That kinda surprised me. I know a lot of people weren't his biggest fan, but I never really saw him post anything too incendiary.

How do you know if someone is banned? Thanks

I was looking around and I couldn't find anything. I know he had some opinions and they weren't always popular, but it seemed like he kept pretty levelheaded all the time and never really got nasty anyone. I'm surprised on this one.
I guess I missed that too. It has seemed to be kind of Kumbaya around here lately, but I guess not.
