Wipers & Newcastle

I'm going to focus on Newcastle a fair amount this spring and early summer given gas prices and it's proximity.

I'm brushing off my bass fishing skills the last year or so but have zero experience with wiper.

Any recommendations on techniques? I'm reading up where I can as it sounds like they are blast to catch. Looks like I have some of the generic recommendations for lures and tackle. Would love to hear what people have to say though.

Yet another new fish to try to get to know.

Newcastle is the premier wiper water in Utah, so you are lucky that it's close by.

Wipers are a great sport fish and not bad eating either. I have only caught them on flies from my kick boat so I may not be much help but the best fly colors for them are white with some flash in it and green with some kind of flash like krystal flash or flashabou.
Make sure you have a stout pole and line to match since some of the fish in Newcastle are over ten pounds. There will be no doubt when you hook one because they hit like freight train and don't give up easily.
Have fun in your pursuit. Let us know how you do.

I'm going to just be my typical self here....

I don't think the wipers in Newcastle really care what color the fly is. If they want to eat it, they'll eat it.

July has been a very good month for me out there. Especially if I'm using flies. Earlier than July, I'd go with bait from shore.

Tom and Vanilla are correct: they pull hard!!

I love wipers. Nothing more fun than a wiper boil. I use crank baits in blue, white and/or silver or white spoons. I've also used white streamers and jigs from shore with success. When there's a boil, they'll hit anything that's moving. Otherwise, they seem to go after fast moving lures. If you're fishing flies, strip as fast as you can. If trolling, 2.5 mph seems to be the ticket for me. No fish in Utah puts up a better fight. But be advised, when they aren't feeding, they aren't. So if you're getting skunked, don't get discouraged. I've often fished all day without a single wiper only to end up with a limit within an hour.

Thx folks. The survey this year on Newcastle sounds like the Wipers are doing great.

I got into a trout stupor for years and never paid attention to any other fish. It's been fun the last year to expand into new fish, especially now that my dad is here (at least through the end of autumn).

Looking at the mercury data it also looks like small wipers are the safest fare out of Newcastle, even my baby girl can have some occasionally.

If I have any luck I'll post up some TRs, maybe with some photos occasionally 😁
